Brought to life by Extreme ski-mountaineer and writer/musician Bill Briggs in the early 1950s from under a bridge that spans the Snake River, the “Teton Tea Parties” may have been the beginnings of a musical get-together of people who loved and wanted to preserve the traditional, folk, and cowboy music of the old country.

Some years later, the Jackson Hole Hootenanny was born. With over 600 shows in its musical history, the Hootenanny stage has been graced by local artists like Bill Briggs, Dick Barker, and John Cooke as well as nationally known singers such as Tom Rush, Ramblin Jack Elliot, and the late John Denver.

I fell in love with two Colorado-grown bands, one called the Dovekins and the other, Paper Bird, at Dornan’s Hootenany in Moose, WY a couple years ago. Both bands remain two of my favorite musical groups to see live. Their sound is americana, folk, blues mixed with a little bluegrass and what the Dovekins call, ‘psychedelic western swing.’

Check out the Dovekins’ latest Album as well as their first album and listen to my personal favorites Golden Pennies and Walk so High.

Also, check out the newest Paper Bird album, Carry On.

Normally reading morning emails is nothing more than monotonous, but today I read blog post from an organization dear to me, First Descents, and was reminded what this day, and everyday for that matter, is all about- ‘totally kicking ass.’

This post was written by one of First Descents campers, Andy Fleming.

Guest Blog author and one of our alum, Andy ‘X2C’ Fleming, shares his thoughts and emotions on what it means to be apart of First Descents. Thank you x2C!!
First Descents Sacred Spirit

I feel alive- very often- and I’m grateful for this. There are times when I feel so alive that I feel electric, excited, at peace, content, relaxed, jazzed up- I feel an emotional flood. I feel alive to the nth degree at First Descents kayak camps when I’m surrounded by amazing people, in nature, being active, creating, caring, learning, pushing my boundaries, helping others to push their boundaries, sharing a quiet and a loud moment, eating healthy, waking early for a run in the mountains, playing bang up kayak polo in the lake, running whitewater, singing on the bus, and dancing on the porch- totally kicking ass. I’m in the Colorado mountains and in the streams. I smell fresh air, trees, flowers, grass, dirt and I see blue bird skies, rocky peaks, aspens, bear claws on trees, flowing water, people smiling, and fear on faces that turns into pure joy.
I feel pure energy- it’s excitement in the moment and excitement in the possibilities. I also feel gut wrenching sadness that cancer makes people ill, that cancer takes lives, that great friends and family suffer emotional, physical, and financial pains. This makes the joy real. This creates perspective for me and drives me to pursue a dual passion- to be involved in people’s lives and to take care of myself as w
ell. We are are gifts and we all have gifts- give gifts, be open to receiving gifts- be the gift. I want to write something deep here- to me it’s float on the water, be on top and below the water, and when I tip over- hold my breath, relax, enjoy the experience, and flip back over- knowing I can survive- take in a great big breath of fresh air, see the world anew, a little stronger, a little wiser, a little more love- it all adds up- it is sacred.

-X2C (Andy)

Yes, I used the word magical because it’s truly the best way to describe the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Beyond the incredible artists that grace the stage for 4 full days, the festivarians and the to-die-for Telluride vistas are what make the experience one hell of a weekend that I vow to never miss.

One of my friends likened Telluride and the weekend to The Shire in Lord of the Rings because, yes, it is truly that magical. You’ve never seen so many barefooted, friendly people in one place.

The lineup included the usual Telluride greats like Sam Bush, Yonder, Tim Obrien, Steve Earle, Jerry Douglas and Bela Fleck as well as my personal favorites, Railroad Earth, Trampled by Turtles and more popular bands like Mumford and Sons, The Head and the Heart, and Old Crow Medicine Show.

For this week’s Make Something! class taught by CP+B‘s, Joe Corr, we had to make a 30 second video about a local news issue and what the comunnity had to say about it.

So, I decided to make a little video about the grand opening of the Valmont Mountain Bike Park, which, after fifteen years of hard work and a lot of tax money, officially opened to riders June, 11th.

I definitely wanted to play up and poke fun at the bro speak that seems to get air time at these kind of events, so I even included the infamous video of the “Dumb Surfer” to really bring out the bro vibe.

While the transitions are a little sloppy and the bro theme didn’t come across as funny as I had hoped, I had a pretty good time making the video in iMovie.
